About the SRAM brand

Product manuals and service guides for all SRAM, Rockshox, Avid and Truvativ products can be found at sram.com or videos can be found on YouTube. SRAM Corporation was founded in Chicago, IL (USA) in 1987 by six employees with one component, Gripshift Twist Shifters. Today, SRAM’s commitment and growth can be measured by its 1,500 employees, its 150+ cycling products, and it’s 12 facilities worldwide. SRAM has found tremendous growth through innovative products, unparallel customer service, strong sales, and complimentary acquisitions. SRAM acquisitions include Sachs Bicycle Components, purchased in 1997, a leading manufacturer of chains, cassettes and hubs. In 2002 SRAM purchased RockShox, the world’s mountain bike suspension specialist. 2004 brought the purchase of both Avid brakes and Truvativ cranks and components. The addition of these companies has allowed SRAM to grow into the world’s second largest component supplier to the cycling industry. SRAM's core philosophy is to make cycling better. Their commitment is expressed in their local, national and international team and event sponsorship.

SRAM Apex 10 Speed Rear Derailleur is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 14.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Mmmjjj from Great Derailleir My choice over Ultegra. Shifts fast and smoothly. Very durable and relatively low weight.

Rated 5 out of 5 by TBBiker from Does the job, straight foreward replacement "You're not pushing it hard enough if you don't have at least one slide a year" - so inevitably this is on the of the more vulnerable parts, but it is straightforward to buy and fit a replacment, although they are a little pricy like most SRAM kit. Just don't hit the brake/gear lever, those are really pricy ...

Rated 4 out of 5 by AntiJazz from Decent value Apex rear mech does this job fine and compatible across the range

Rated 5 out of 5 by NZLedge from Every bit as good as Rival Have Rival on my road bike. Decided to go with Apex for a cross bike I was building and have been completely happy with it. Smooth and reliable shifting.

What is the difference between short cage and medium cage? Not sure which one I'd need.

Asked by: Bstr40
Short cage can be used with up to a 28t cassette, the medium cage can be used with up to a 32t cassette.

sram apex and red compatability

My gruppo is sram red compact with an 11-26 block. I want to experiment with a greater range of block for some alpine riding. If I use 11-34 and an APex rear derailleur should I use the short or mid cage version and which chain and what length is suitable.
Asked by: JonhR
Yes you can use the Apex rear mech and use a larger 11-34 cassette. These parts are compatible with SRAM red parts so this shouldn't be an issue. You will need at least a Medium cage I think for this cassette and chainset. Any SRAM 10 speed chain should be fine but I couldn't tell you what chain length is required.

8 speed?

I have an 8 speed cassette 11-28T and 28-48 on the front. Is this compatible? If not any suggestions?
Asked by: bensum
No, it's a 10 speed derailleur - try Shimano or a new group set, or a new bike?

WIFLI compatibility

What is the minimum cassette size or capacity of the medium derailleur? I don't want to run a 32t cassette in the back all of the time, but would like the option. Having trouble finding any concrete info on Sram's website.
Asked by: Agitprop
I can confirm that the medium cage should operate up to a maximum of a 32T sprocket.

If I want an Apex 11-32 cassette, I need an Apex rear mech. Do I then need the Apex gear lever of will my Shimano 10 speed 105 suffice?

I've heard mix opinions on this?
Asked by: Simon8
You can use a Shimano gear lever for a front derailleur but not for a rear derailleur. If you want to use a Apex rear cassette and derailleur you will need SRAM gear levers.

I am running SRAM apex with a rear cassette of 28t , would like to go to 32t.how do I tell if I already have a medium cage derailleur.there does not

Appear to be any identifying marking on it?
Asked by: Voyager1
I would advise that if you are running a 28T, You will have a short caged on the bike. You would need a medium caged if you were to go up to a 32T.
