About the Saris brand

Home for CycleOps/Saris is in an old farmhouse in bike-crazy Madison, Wisconsin. Their production facilities are behind the farmhouse. Believe it or not their origins are in curtain rods. Two brothers had a company that made window products. After the Graber brothers sold their company they needed something to do. They experimented in their garage and came up with a bike rack. They sold lots of racks under the Graber name and then sold the company. That was sometime back in 1973. Chris and Sara Fortune purchased the company in 1989 when it was selling 80,000 bike racks a year. In 1990 and 1991 Sara and Chris introduced a high end brand of bike rack, renaming them “Saris.” Today Saris is a leading supplier to the bicycle industry in 30 countries. The company expanded in 1999 by acquiring the Cycleops brand of bike trainer. As usual they set out to improve on the design and by 2001 they created a new trainer frame and in 2002 they debuted the world’s first progressive resistance magnetic trainer. It was in 2001 that they heard about a hub that could measure power output and they jumped at the chance to bring this product to cyclists. They bought the company that invented Powertap and started a new round of innovations Dede Demet won the gold medal at the 2002 Montreal World Cup on her powertap.

Saris H3 Direct Drive Smart Trainer is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 18.
Rated 2 out of 5 by Dicknit from Easy to set up; Fantastic when it works Easy to set up. Came with choice of end caps for through axle and QR skewers. Easy to connect to on line apps. Calibration via Saris app simple. Fantastic realism when connected to Rouvy (other apps available). Such a shame reliability (build quality?) appears to be an issue. I had to return mine after 5 weeks owing to loud rubbing noise. Maybe I received a Friday afternoon unit? Look on social media and there appear to be numerous issues with the Saris H3. Support via the US appears very slow; UK seems better however ....... If you are going to get one be careful where you buy from as some retailers give you better and faster support than others (Wiggle take note).

Rated 4 out of 5 by AndyH99 from Good, but not compatible with Zwift via iPad Bought this as an upgrade to a roll on turbo. Initially very impressed with it’s smoothness and quietness. However, since October 2020, the Bluetooth connection between it & Zwift via an iPad has become unstable making Zwift unusable. Works well with other apps such as ROUVY or RGT, but if you want to use Zwift on an iPad, choose a different turbo

Rated 5 out of 5 by teomagio from Great but a little bit expensive Fast shipping, good product but unfortunately, a few days after ordering it, I found it about 180€ cheaper at another site, which disappointed me a lot! Could had been offered at a better price I think! Other than that, really happy with the product.

Will we need different cassettes?

My partner and I are considering a shared smart trainer. I ride a compact set up with an 11 speed Ultegra 11-32 and my partners bike has triple gearing with a 10 speed 105 11-28 cassette. Would we need to get 2 cassettes to use both bikes on the trainer, pr is there a compromise that would work?
Asked by: Gillywigs
I can't imagine any way around it - you'd need two cassettes... a 10 speed shifter will slip (and/or be very noisy) on an 11 speed cassette and vice-versa.

Is this compatible with Campagnolo cassette or do you need to buy a separate adapter?

Asked by: CampyL
You will need to purchase a Campagnolo freehub body separately.

I see that it measures power without a separate sensor, but do I still need a power meter?

Asked by: richardatbelair
The power meter is built in to the trainer so no, you won't need an additional separate power meter.
