Magazine reviews for Race Face Single Narrow/Wide Chainring

Review from MBR

Like SRAM XX1 and XO1, Race Face's new Narrow/Wide chainrings use a fat/thin tooth profile to aid chain retention. The idea is that this interface with the inner and outer link plates on the chain and stops the chain falling off when riding choppy terrain. The key difference between XX1 and Narrow/Wide is that the latter fits a regular 104 BCD crank. Which means you don't need a special SRAM crank or XX1 spider.

One of the reasons SRAM created the bespoke spider is to accommodate the smaller XX1 chainrings (these are available in 28-tooth for steep climbing), but Race Face offers a 30-tooth by offsetting the ring slightly inboard of the cranks uising thin alloy spacers [ed note: this spacing is machined into the chainring].

Like the company's standard Single rings, the Narrow/Wide rings are machined form aluminium plate with an 'I-Beam' cross section that reduces weight and adds stiffness. The anodising wore off after a couple of rides but I've had zero issue with wear on the teeth themselves. Retention is still as good today as it was when I fitted it two months ago - in fact, I've yet to drop a chain.

You may not get the 11 gears of the full XX1 system, but in terms of retention the Race Face is comparable to XX1, it's cheaper and , since it'll bolt straight on your chainset, there's no need to make massive changes to the rest of your drivechain.

In conclusion...

For trail riding, Narrow/Wide rings and others like them look set to revolutionise chain retention because they offer one of the best features of XX1 but at a fraction of the cost. If you're going to buy a new single ring for your bike, make sure it's this one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Jacob46 from Absolutely amazing Since I upgraded my bike I have already had trouble with my chain falling off and it has started to turn into a routine always having to stop and get then my friends waiting for me at the bottom it started to get really frustrating and then I bought this and not once has my chain fallen off it has also made the bike feel so much smoother definitely worth the money

Rated 5 out of 5 by roadandoffroad from Does the job very well Bought this for my Specialized Vado SL to replace a 44T chainring as I live in a very hilly area. The 38T chainring works brilliantly. Means I can keep a higher cadence on the steep gradients which the motor likes and so I use a lower level of assist but the climbs are easier. Long term I'm keeping an eye on the chainring for wear as ebike drive trains come under much more stress but am delighted with this purchase. Highly recommended and not expensive.

Rated 5 out of 5 by jpblue from A great product, well made and very hard wearing. Changed from a smaller chain ring to a larger, I'm glad I've done it. Better speed and still great climbing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by musicman490 from excellent product Took a chance converting a bike from triple to single ring, but encountered no problems at all with chain retention. Recommended.

Are the 110 and 130mm BCD chainrings 4 or 5 bolt?

As these are road dimensions for BCD, I can only find cranks for either in 5 bolt.
Asked by: kingotheshire
They all come with five bolt holes.

Wondering what chain will fit this crank. Just found out that my current chain does not fit it as the teeth are too large. Many thanks, Ed

chainline

Can anybody tell me if this chainring has any effect on the chainline. For example I plan to replace the outside ring of an ultegra 6700 chainset with one of these and would like to know if it will keep the chainline of the existing outside ring or if it will be a few mm inboard or outboard. Thanks
Asked by: steadylad
The chainline would be affected inboard by around 2-3mm and these are only designed for use with a single chainring crank arm on the front so it's unlikely these would fit correctly.

Would this be compatible with 104/64 BCD?

I want to convert my 3x10 XT group set to a 1x10. I ordered a Hope Narrow/Wide but the ring didn't marry up with my XT spider (see photo) I've been told that I need a 104/64 BCD. Would this fit? If not, could you recommend one that will?
Asked by: Shaun123
As long as the BCD and speeds match up this should work for you.

Ok For CycloCross?

Hi, Just started racing 'cross, and have had quite a few chain offs, and looking at changing to a 1x10 setup. Will this run ok with Shimano rear mechs, mine is a long cage at the mo as running 46/36 11-30, and also no real need for any chain catchers/bash guards? Thanks
Asked by: Woody1976
Will work fine with Shimano. I run one without s chain retention devise and have had no issues.

32T - reversible or not?

Can this chainring be fitted either way around? or does it have to have the graphics side facing away from the bike? I am ordering the 32T version.
Asked by: Motozulu
It can be fitted either way round as the teeth are not directional
