The Unit X from Kona is a versatile, agile and stylish hardtail that's ideal for riding anywhere on the mountainside. It features a Reynolds 520 Chromoly (CrMo) frame, a SRAM SX Eagle 12-Speed drivetrain, SRAM Level hydraulic disc brakes and large, fast-rolling and high grip 29x2.6" wheels and tyres.
This stylish hardtail MTB rolls upon 29” WTB Boost spaced wheels wrapped in WTB Ranger tyres, giving you fast-rolling speed, grip and dependable performance in all weather and terrain conditions. The Kona Unit X is a viable all-around ride that’s ideal for any adventure, along any trail, anywhere on Earth.
Reynolds 520 tubes are mandrel-butted for accurate profiles and available in a wide range of shapes. Weight savings from butting provides competitively priced, light framesets that are noticeably compliant on the road or the trail and are guaranteed to last a lifetime.
By using a 44mm oversized headtube, Kona is able to run tapered steerer forks while using a large external lower cup headset bearing. The larger diameter steerer tube adds considerable stiffness and will increase responsiveness to the front end, improving all-around performance.
12x142mm, 12x148 and 12x157 rear axle standards provide two major advantages to the Kona rider: the 12mm diameter of the rear axle provides the rear hub and frame with a stiff interface, while the 142/148/157mm outer diameter of the hub allows the wheel to be quickly and properly positioned in the frame before the rear axle is inserted. For 2017, you’ll see the 12x148 Boost standard in the mix. Boost spacing provides more tyre clearance at the chainstay yoke, while the rear wheel is stiffer and more durable relative to a 12x142 thru-axle.
Tubeless rims allow for tyres with more puncture resistance; the ability to run lower tyre pressure, which provides better tyre grip on the trail; lower rolling resistance; and weight savings over traditional tube and tyre systems.

Born in the deep forests of Vancouver, British Columbia in 1988, Kona has since gone on to become one of the most influential bicycle manufacturers in the world, known for it’s innovations in mountain bike design, creative marketing and now, road and commuter offerings.

Named for the breezy trade winds that keep the Hawaiian Islands lush and tropical, throughout the company’s 28-year history, their designers have always believed that technology isn’t about creating new confusing acronyms and high-tech principles that may or may not help a bike to ride better. Quite often it’s the simplest innovations that enable the greatest improvements.

With offices in Vancouver, BC, Bellingham, Washington, and Geneva, Switzerland, and a staff that lives and breathes riding bikes, today Kona is perhaps best known for its blend of modern technology and creative thought. One of the most notable innovations of 2014, one that garnered them an incredible amount of attention, was the simple idea of rider fit, best viewed in the geometry and design of their incredibly successful line of Process enduro bikes.

A lot of the company’s most noteworthy technology comes in the form of its undying attention to detail. From steel to carbon fiber to titanium, refined aluminum alloys through to Scandium 69, Kona features perfected bicycle models ranging from Kids’ cyclocross bikes to World Cup downhill race machines, stylish inner city commuters to flat-out, perfectly priced road bikes. Still owned by its original founders, Kona is one of cycling’s great success stories.
