About the KMC brand

KMC produces 82 million chains a year and is a major supplier to Shimano who fit 10 spd chains which are also Campagnolo compatible. However, in the old days, all you needed was a screwdriver to make the “quick link”, looks as though I need to buy some link pliers !!!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Gone rusty!! Bought a gold link so I can see where the link is on my silver chain. Left in my saddle bag but noticed the unused link is starting to go rusty! Sure this wont effect the performance but plating is obviously poor.....

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good to have one in the saddle bag Always carry one of these in my saddle bag "just in case" and have one in the tool box at home. It's best to get the right tool to undo and refit to make the job easy as they can be a real pain to try and remove or refit without them. An essential spare !

What speed is this 'Missing Link'?

The KMC link is titled 9 speed. The image shows it's 10 speed. Is there a difference between 9 speed links and 10 speed links?

At the moment we only have the 10sp link in stock and they are not compatible with the wider 9sp chains I'm afraid.

do you need a tool or can you fit by hand

It's technically possible to fit these without a special tool, but if you're replacing an old split-link you'd probably find it much easier with a pair of thin-nose pliers, or improvising with a cable tie or a bit of string to compress the links. If you're not replacing an old split-link you're probably using a chain-breaker anyway.

Is this 10 speed link compatible with 11 speed?

Sadly no, they are differ in size. You will need a 11sp link for an 11sp chain.

Doesn’t seem to fit?

Hi, have tried to fit this to my 10 speed road bike chain but the pins are too wide to fit through the existing links- do I need a different size link?

The only suggestion I can think of here is that , I learned to properly clean the area of chain I’m working on ,I use chain cleaner and brush? Then drying the links, but ever so lightly, adding just the smallest dab of oil to the links to be joined. That way the speed link will have a good purchase on the pin and slide fairly easily. It might be useful to practice using the link on an old piece of chain? Just so that you get the ‘knack’ of doing it. I would say , persevere with it, you’ll pick it up very quickly it isn’t difficult and it’s an efficient way of breaking and re joining a chain efficiently. Good luck with it.

Is this useable with Campag 10sp?

On your web page this missing link is described as suitable for Shimano, KMC, Campag and Sram chains. However, on the product itself it only mentions KMC and Shimano (see photo). In the past, I've bought similar missing links that have been explicitly marked as Campag. Is it safe to use this product with a Campag 10-speed chain?
