It contains 4 Parts carbohydrate to 1 Part whey protein, hence the name. Research shows that this critical ratio, when used during exercise, provides athletes with more energy than carbohydrate alone. Based on the Award Winning complex carbohydrate found in standard High5 Energy Drink, Energy Drink with Protein is easy on the stomach, hypotonic and refreshing.

Performance proven in the toughest races. Most endurance athletes should be aware the primary cause of fatigue is the depletion of muscle and liver glycogen (carbohydrate) and that ingesting carbohydrates during exercise will delay the onset of this fatigue. However many athletes remain unaware that Energy Drink with Protein containing 4 parts Carbohydrate and 1 part Protein can extend the time to fatigue up to an incredible 29% when compared to a carbohydrate only drink and 57% when compared with water.

Here's why. Consuming carbohydrates during exercise delays the onset of fatigue by fuelling your muscles via blood glucose and therefore sparing muscle and liver glycogen (carbohydrate stored in your muscles and liver). The amount of carbohydrate (energy) that is delivered to the working muscles is determined by the amount of insulin released by the Pancreas in response to the rise in your blood sugar caused by the ingested carbs. Ingested Protein also causes insulin to be released, and, with the right carbs and protein, in the right ratio (4 Carbs to 1 Protein) the gastric emptying speed is not slowed and there is a larger insulin response resulting in more carbohydrate (energy) being 'driven' into the working muscles during exercise. The more carbs i.e. energy, going into the working muscles the more endurance you will have.

Directions for Use

Mix the powder contents into 500ml of water and shake well. Drink 15-250ml every 20 minutes during sport. Consume before and during sport.

Magazine reviews for HIGH5 Energy Drink with Protein (1.6kg)

Review from MBUK

As the name suggests, this drink from High5 contains carbohydrate and protein in a 4:1 ratio. Confusingly the carbohydrate element is made up of another 4:1 ratio - 'Super Carbs' glucose and fructose - designed to increase energy delivery to working muscles and reduce dehydration.

We're told the protein element boosts available energy for endurance athletes. With antioxidant and electrolyte compounds too, there's a mouthful of science to digest, so it's a good thing citrus and summer fruit flavours taste good. It's a bit on the pricey side though.

In conclusion...

Mind-boggling amounts of technology for a drink. It does the trick, but the cost is a bit prohibitive

Rating: 4/5

Review from Cycling Plus

This drink is four parts carbohydrates to one part whey protein. High Five claims that this is combination gives up to 29% increase of carb take up over a straight carb drink because the protein causes insulin to be released, resulting in more carbohydrate beingsent to the muscles when you're riding. The added protein in the drink also stops protein being used to fuel muscles while riding during longer events, when your energy levels start to run low.

In conclusion...

A great tasting long distance energy fuel

Rating: 9/10

the EnergySource 4:1 contains electrolyte?

Could you please tell me the EnergySource 4:1 contains electrolyte? If not, is it no problem that the EnergySource 4:1 and the ZeroDrink get into one bottle?
Asked by: wiggleme
I sometimes mix a bottle by one half of "4:1" and the other with an electrolyte pellet. That works fine, too.

Do I need to drink water or isotonic drink in addition to the 4:1 drink during an 8 hour cycle tour??

Is the approximately 1 liter 4:1 per hour enough for an endurance race? Or do I drink in addition an Isotonic drink or plane water??
Asked by: JanPiet
it already has isotonic properties but if your a heavy sweater you can mix in a zero tab of same flavour.

Can this 4:1 be mixed with milk?

I was looking at different recovery type shakes and the amount of different drinks powders I have lined up on my shelf and wondered if anyone has tried mixing this one with milk for a post exercise recovery type shake?? Just a thought before I buy a big tub of protein powder for 30+ quid!! Any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated.
Asked by: Nelly1974
4:1 has been designed for use during and after sport so yes you can use it after your ride. It does not contain as much protein as research suggests should be in a post exercise drink (30%) but it's not that far off and I wouldn't worry about it if you only want one large tub at home instead of two! I've never mixed it with milk but you don't need to mix it with milk to have it as a recovery shake. In fact it's better to mix it with water because it gets absorbed quicker - something that's really important after exercise. Milk slows down the absorption process.

High5 EnergySource 4:1 in use with a 3 litre Camelbak

I use a 3 litre Camelbak and i was wondering roughly how many scoops should I use? If its 2 scoups per 500ml that means it will take 6 scoops. I think that's a lot. Or does it purely go down to how strong I want it? Thanks
Asked by: Nebz
Hi - I found the recommended strength just right - any less and its rather insipid and tasteless, any more and it gets a bit "syrup-ey". You do get loads in the tub though - so it should last a while

Is it isotonic?

The description refers to it being hypotonic. Is this the same as isotonic?
Asked by: Stephos
Isotonic sports drinks contain similar concentrations of salt and sugar as in the human body. Hypertonic sports drinks contain a higher concentration of salt and sugar than the human body. Hypotonic sports drinks contain a lower concentration of salt and sugar than the human body.

Would you recommend this product for diabetics cycling in 200k events.

I am an insulin dependant diabetic with 32 years and now 42 years old cycling about 120 miles per week and taking part in 200k events.
Asked by: madmic
Yes. I'm T1D running ultramarathons and have been totally happy with this. Try their Xtreme blend as well. It contains caffeine which will make the carbohydrate more available and it also delivers a 47g CHO per 500mL in recommended ratio, whereas this delivers about 37g CHO. Reliable product, great exercise fuel, great value, good sugar profile for active diabetics too.

What is the advised workout period to use this?

Is there a rule of thumb for how long you should exercise for if using this product to feel the benefits? I.e. is an hours cycling at a quick pace (17-20mph average) worth it?
Asked by: RobMCamb
Hi Rob, Thank you for your question. I would say for an hour you would be better off using something like a ZERO tablet (also available on Wiggle). If however, that pace is a high intensity for you, you may benefit from using 4:1. Generally 4:1 is used for rides over 1.5 h in duration or when doing lots of training back to back. I hope that helps and if you have any more questions, just reply to the thread. James @ HIGH5
