Top Features of the CTC Cycling UK Plastic Bike Bag

Large clear plastic bag
Size: 127cm x 245cm (50" x 100")
100% clear polyethene and thus fully recycleable

The Cycling UK (formerly known as the CTC) designed heavy-duty polythene bag is big enough for packing up a bike, yet is light enough and small enough when folded to carry on the bike whilst touring. Accepted by most airlines and coach operators, the bag protects the bike by letting baggage handlers see what it is but you can add your own padding eg pipe lagging as required. Parcel tape for wrapping not included. The bag can also be used for storing muddy or oily bikes in car boots or on trains etc. This bag generally survives for between 8 and 12 trips on planes/coaches and then you should consider replacing it, as a consumable item.

For more information on taking bikes by public transport, CTC members can access our library of information sheets by logging into the Cycling UK website - www.cyclinguk.org

About the CTC brand

As the UK's National Cyclists' Organisation, CTC has been protecting and promoting the rights of cyclists since 1878. CTC is a not-for-profit organisation that is funded through its membership and donations in return for support. By joining CTC you are supporting UK cycling and giving us a louder voice when campaigning locally and nationally on the issues that are important to you. CTC was founded in 1878 as the Bicycle Touring Club, subsequently becoming the Cyclists' Touring Club. In 2008 CTC is celebrating 130 years of working for travelling, recreational and utility cycle users. We are the forerunners of the world wide network of cycling, motoring and tourism organisations, many of whom based their services on CTC's. The organisation has its origins in the early days of cycling when the bicycle opened up new horizons for independent travel. CTC set out to identify suitable hostelries for its members and include them in members' guides and handbooks. Occasionally you will spot a round plaque on the wall of older hotels showing the CTC emblem of a winged wheel, indicating a long history of welcoming cyclists.

CTC Cycling UK Plastic Bike Bag is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 359.
Rated 5 out of 5 by VeryhandsomeScot from Perfect for touring. It's basically a large polythene bag! Durable enough to be strapped to your pannier rack and reused to pack up your bike for the return trip! Simply place the bike in side and use a cable tie or tape, to seal the opening.great value.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Caribike from Not acceptable by airline Bicycle packed in this back was not accepted by Ryanair at Bournemouth Airport. My friend and I forfeited our return flight and and were refused a refund.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Kelvins from Cheap and easy to use Used this product when flying abroad to Italy, Croatia and Spain. Easy to pack bike into and no damage in transit as handlers can see bike in bag. The big plus is that the bags store neatly in our small backpacks, which is all we take when cycling abroad. No need to store bike case anywhere. This means we can arrive and leave from different airports. Highly recommend. Also keeps car boot clean if needed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by KajoK from Cheap, and 'portable', but won't last many trips I needed something that I could actually store in my panniers, during my cycle touring trip, and to use again on my return journey by plane. It served its purpose but managed to rip a small hole in it, although it's fairly strong material. It also takes quite a bit of time and effores, to get the bike securely in, especially as I had to take a wheel off, and then tape up the bag. I estimate that I get just a few more plane journeys out of it, and that's ok, because I don't tend to do more than 2 or 3 per year.

airport approved

does anyone know are airlines happy to take bikes inside one of these and if so do they still insist on wheel off and handlebars turned. can you just get away with wheeling it inside and wheeling it out of the bag the other end at luggage reclaim as it stands. its such a phaff having to do all the mechanical stuff to the bike to ship it to point of tour start? this looks like the answer to my problems if the airline are happy with it
Asked by: sheri
I took my bike on Virgin Atlantic on this. I just had to remove the pedals and turn the handlebars round. Wheels stayed on. Takes a couple of minutes.

TT Bike

Would this product fit TT bike? or can you suggest any other bag to fit over TT to protect from some weather? I have a BMC TT02 on Topeak rack under cover but sometimes get rain and dirt if windy. I am after a bag that can go over it on the rack to protect, keep clean and limit pre ride maintenance. Appreciate any advice.

Is the open edge of the bag (through which you put the bike) the top or one of the sides?

Asked by: Tandemtourist
The opening is technically on the bottom, as you simply put this over the bike. I hope this helps.

Bike Storage

I store my bike outside during winter, would this bag keep my bike dry during the cold damp months?
Asked by: PoppaBooth
You could use it for outdoor storage. It will keep the rain off, but frequent putting in and out will eventually cause wear and tear. Also, if you close the bag too thoroughly it will retain any moisture on the bike exacerbating corrosion.

Any idea when these may be back in stock?

I'm flying out on the 21st of August and need a couple of these. Was going to buy them now, but I can't as they're out of stock. Can you let me know when they might be back in stock or recommend an alternative that is light and doesn't cost the earth?

Can the bag take the bike dismantled?

I need to take the bike on a French train where the maximum size is 120cm x 90cm. I.e. I would have to fold part of the bag and tape it up.
