The design for the original crank brothers pedal began out of frustration. The founders of crank brothers, Carl and Frank, were tired of getting stuck in mud-covered pedals with no way in or out. They realised that existing pedals were too complicated It started with a simple question: what is the best way to attach a shoe to a crank? To answer this question, Carl and Frank created a system with only two moving parts hinging on a spring. This system became known as the eggbeater pedal, and later it was adapted into the candy pedal.

About the Crank Brothers brand

Carl and Frank (hence Crank Brothers) have always been keen MTBers. Ever since they were engineers working for a diving equipment company in Southern California in the late 1980s, they have been exploring ideas of how they could design cycling products that would improve their riding experience. In 1994 they launched their first product: the highly innovative “Speed Lever”. This telescopic tyre lever made installing/removing tyres from rims much easier. The M series mini tools and the Power Pump range of mini hand pumps followed 4 years later; the latter including the proprietary “high volume/high pressure” switch that is still appreciated today. The brand’s breakthrough, however, came when Crank Brothers launched the Eggbeater pedal in 2001: an extremely lightweight, minimalist pedal with superb mud-shedding capability and 4-sided entry. It is this same pedal platform that paved the way for subsequent pedal models to cover all MTB disciplines – Candy, Mallet and 5050. Today many of the top athletes in the World ride crankbrothers pedals. You will find they are well represented at top level cross-country MTB, Cyclo-cross and World Cup DH events. Innovative design of aesthetically disruptive products remains the core mission. All crankbrothers products are technical, durable and beautiful.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Mickys from New bike = new pedals New blue bike just needed new blue pedals! :) I have a couple of bikes and these pedals on both of them. Love the mud clearance, Like the option of degrees for release when fitting the cleats. They are nice and simple, no need to faf about with little adjustment screws and they look so cool....

Rated 5 out of 5 by FredMac from Better than SPD's I have to admit I'm addicted to Crank Bros pedals, the way they click in and hold tight to the look. I've found them easier to click into (and out of in emergencies) when traveling through traffic and they hold on tight when you need them to. They last a long time so are a worthy investment if you buy a good bike that will also last.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Sam2076 from Faultless Switched to Egg Beaters to deal with the issue of mud clogging up in my old standard shimano pedals. Since then, it has never missed a beat in spite of some very muddy rides. Also find them much easier to click into even in dry conditions. Highly recommend.

Rated 4 out of 5 by vneedham from Minimalist I prefer MTB shoes to road shoes, but still want to keep my bike's weight down. These pedals are about as minimalist as they come. I have sets on two bikes that have survived my less than gentle attentions. Note that you do need to keep the mechanism clean and lubricated or clipping in gets to be problematic.

Updated Bearings and hex endcap?

Hi, I appreciate that it has already been stated that they are the latest version but prior to purchase please could you let me know if they are the ones with the updated bearings and hex endcap (as opposed to flat-head screw endcap)? Thanks!
Asked by: MAPC
I can confirm that these are the new stock with the upgraded bearings and the new end cap with the hex closure. I hope this helps.
