Rated 1 out of 5 by from Cannot remove hose from calliper body Despite the supplied instructions detailing how to shorten the hose along with replacement olives and hose inserts to reinstall the hose (all supplied in the box), it is actually impossible to remove the hose from the calliper body due to, I assume a manufacturing error. I have returned the first front brake set for a refund (still waiting for this Wiggle!!!) and in the meantime order another set, again from Wiggle. Lo and behold the second set has exactly the same problem; hence why I believe there is a manufacturing issue. The annoying thing is I have already fitted the rear brake set and had no problems removing the hose from the calliper body, shortening the hose, passing it through the frame, reinstalling the brake and it working perfectly. So, if you don’t want to shorten the 1m supplied hose or pass the hose through internal fork routing then these brakes are great. If you do need to shorten the hose and/or pass the hose down through the fork leg, then you’ll quickly find these brakes are an expensive waste of time. I’m sticking with cable disc brakes with compression-less outers!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid product. Does the job These are the fully hydraulic TRP road brake. Some other reviews are of the hybrid cable/hydraulic unit. Used these for 2 seasons on singlespeed cross bike. Easy to fit. Everything you need is in the box. They're nice and simple, constructed of good quality materials, have lasted well and do the job. Braking is reasonably progressive and there's always enough power to get to lock with the supplied 160mm discs. The kit is advertised with a 140mm disc version, but it's never available. This is no bad thing, as I think it would be too weak for most applications. Pad wear is ok. The brake body is big and comfortable for riding on the hoods, but this results in the only downside for the brake that I can see - you need quite big hands to operate the levers from all positions, so may not suit all riders.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good brake, US buyers beware of L/R brake convent. The hylex is a great product overall. Only major complaint is that the nut used to tighten down the band clamp that holds the brake lever to the handlebar is made of soft, non-ferrous material (stainless? aluminum?) and strips easily. The shoulder on the bolt is also slightly too long, which resulted in the nut bottoming out before the clamp was fully tightened. Easily fixed with a better quality, steel brake boss bolt, but something to be wary of. Also, if you are ordering from the US, be sure you are getting the correct "side" lever. Left/right brake lever conventions are opposite in the UK vs the US.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good budget unit but not without issues This unit is my first experience with disc brakes so I am not overly qualified to comment. I had it fitted, plus CX fork to my fixed langster commuting hack, as I was chewing up rims and brakes on my regular London commute. There is quite a long pull on the action as it is the unit and piston which is hydraulic and not the cables. However, once it bites it is quite effective but not startling so. Handy for my fixed to prevent me going over the bars. There is quite a lot of judder nonetheless but the bite is progressive and predictable. The hoods are an odd shape. I have smallish slim hands and ride Campag normally. The hoods are very slim in it is not really comfortable to ride them in a normal fashion with a finger hooked over the lever. However, lever shape is a personal thing. Performance in the dry is good, judder excepted, but on one really wet ride home they did wash out completely which was something of a surprise as I thought that was the advantage of discs over rim brakes. Overall, a good budget unit and ideal if you want to put just one brake on a bike, as I did.

Can they be set up in a typical British way?

The information suggests that they are left front/right rear levers and I wondered if they can be set up right front/left rear as most people use in the UK?

Can the hoses be shortened on these units?

It looks like there is a pre-formed banjo connection on both ends rather than an olive and compression nut.

We have checked our stock and the models we have do not use the banjo connection therefore the hose can be shortened if required. Please note a separate bleed kit + correct olives and barbs would be required to re-connect hose and bleed the system if hose is shortened.
